Easy One-Pot Homemade Hamburger Helper
This One-Pot Homemade Hamburger Helper is much healthier than the boxed version that contains an ingredient list full of things you can't even pronounce. This homemade recipe uses real ingredients: beef, pasta, milk, cheese, vegetables, and spices. Not only is it healthier than the store-bought version, but it also tastes better and is just as quick and easy to prepare.
Another great advantage of a homemade version is the option to swap out ingredients to make it healthier for you and your family. Need more vegetables in your diet? Simply add in peas, spinach, mushrooms, peppers or any other vegetables you have on hand. If you prefer not to use ground beef, swap it out in favor of ground chicken or turkey meat instead. As an added health benefit you can also use whole wheat macaroni or any pasta you like. Use gluten-free pasta and turn this dish into a gluten-free option!
What If I don't have a One-Pot Pressure Cooker?
One-pot meals not only make for faster meal preparation but also means less clean up afterward, which is a win-win in our books. We used the Ninja Foodi to make this Homemade Hamburger Helper recipe and it can just as easily be made in an Instant Pot as well. If you don't have a One-Pot pressure cooker you can make this recipe on your stovetop using a Dutch Oven. Follow the directions from steps 1-5 and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover the pot and simmer for 12-15 minutes or until the macaroni is soft and tender. Add in the milk and bring to a gentle boil. Then stir in the shredded cheese and simmer until it reaches your desired consistency.
Notes
- When adding the pasta, try to let it float on top of the meat and vegetables to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot
- Add in peas, bell peppers, mushrooms or any other vegetable you like
- As a healthier option, you can also use ground chicken or turkey instead of ground beef
- The sauce will thicken as it cools
- Garnish with cheddar or parmesan cheese
- This recipe was made using the Ninja Foodi, a programmable multi-use pressure cooker that can also steam, saute, slow cook, dehydrate, bake, broil, roast and air crisp
